Kathmandu. KATHMANDU: Nepal Media Society has expressed serious concern over the arrest of Editor-in-Chief of Jana Aastha Weekly and senior journalist Kishor Shrestha on the basis of his writing of the news.
Issuing a press release on Thursday, the Society concluded that the arrest of journalist Shrestha was against the spirit of press freedom and freedom of expression.
“If any complaint or objection arises regarding the news published by a journalist, it should be resolved through the existing laws and established process related to the press,” the statement reads.
The Society claims that such an act will have a negative impact on the environment of independent journalism and discourage journalists from disseminating news fearlessly.
Stating that the right to press freedom of expression, right to information and the right to independent journalism guaranteed by the Constitution of Nepal were the pillars of democratic system, the Society has also called for an end to arresting journalists for news or terrorizing them in the name of investigation.
The Society has stressed that the constitutional norms and professional rights of journalists should be fully respected while seeking legal remedy in relation to the news published by the society.
Issuing a press release today, Society General Secretary Bodhraj Tripathi urged the bodies concerned to immediately and unconditionally release senior journalist Kishor Shrestha. The Society has also urged the bodies concerned to seek resolution through legal process if there is any legal question or objection related to the published news and the Society has pledged to remain alert, committed and alert to any kind of pressure, interference or suppression on the independent journalism.
