Speaking at an interaction program organized in Kathmandu on Friday, senior advocate Dinesh Tripathi said that the government’s extreme interference in the press has endangered the freedom of press and expression.
“Article 19 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights have been suppressed by the government to a serious threat to freedom of press and expression,” he said.

Tripathi said that lactating women, elderly and children in the squatters were oppressed in violation of international law.
The government has violated many international laws. Responsible people involved in such acts can fall into the trap of international law at any time. We should also appeal to the international bodies,” he said, accusing the incumbent government of attacking the press even by surpassing Gyanendra Shah.
On the occasion, Ganesh Pandey, chairman of Press Chautari, demanded the immediate release of journalists, saying the state had used illegal means to arrest journalists.
“If a journalist is not satisfied with anyone and if he is not satisfied with the news, he should go to the Press Council to lodge a complaint,” Pandey said. Pandey accused the government of arresting and arresting journalist Kishor Shrestha out of revenge.
On the occasion, Press Union General Secretary Dilip Poudel accused the government of trying to intimidate the press by arresting journalists.
He accused the government of treating the press like an enemy instead of making the activities against the country’s anomalies effective by taking the press along and in cooperation.
“The illegal arrest of Kishor Shrestha needs to be internationalized through the parliament,” Poudel said.
General Secretary Poudel said that Nepali journalists would face it firmly if they tried to intimidate the press. On the occasion, Kamal Giri, chairman of Press Centre, accused the government of arresting journalist Shrestha and seizing mobile phones and computers to search for the source of news. Giri accused the government of trying to reach an opposition-less situation by shutting down the questions of the citizens as journalists are the profession of questioning.
He warned the government to accept the fact that journalists have a fundamental right to ask questions.
