. Argentina’s star midfielder Enzo Fernandez has joined Manchester City for a Premier League record fee of £125 million. The club officially announced on Tuesday that he has signed a contract until 2031.

The 25-year-old Fernandez arrived at City after a successful spell at Chelsea from 2023 to 2026. He won the UEFA Conference League and the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup for Chelsea. According to ESPN, the deal, which was worth 125 million pounds (about $169 million), is the same as the record fee paid by Liverpool when Liverpool signed Alexander Isak from Newcastle United last season. After the deal, Fernandes also completed a medical examination.

Fernandez started his professional career in Argentina’s Defensa e Justicia and River Plate. After winning four major titles on the River Plate, he went to Benfica in Portugal, where he won the Primera Liga.

His achievements in international football are also noteworthy. He has won the 2022 FIFA World Cup and the 2024 Copa America for Argentina.

In the 2026 FIFA World Cup, Argentina lost to Spain in the final and finished runners-up.

After joining City, Fernandes said he was happy to be part of one of the best clubs in the world. “Manchester City has been the most successful club in England in recent years. I am ready to come here and contribute to winning more titles for the team,” he said in a statement issued by the club. Hugo Vienna, the club’s director of football, described Fernandes as a “technically excellent, hard-working and versatile midfielder” and hoped his arrival would make City’s squad stronger.
