Kathmandu. Doctors at Kathmandu Medical College (KMC) have successfully removed a complex tumour weighing about one and a half kilograms from the stomach of an eight-year-old girl and saved her life.
Niyama Rai, daughter of Nabin Rai of Triyuga Municipality-2, has been removed from the tumor called teratoma in her stomach.
After being diagnosed with vomiting and fever for about one and a half months, the parents brought Niama to KMC for treatment. During the medical examination, a CT scan was done after suspecting an abnormally large tumor inside the stomach. The CT scan showed that there was a large tumor inside the abdomen and it was putting pressure on the surrounding vital organs and blood vessels.
According to the doctor, the tumor had pushed the kidneys downward and the lungs upwards. Similarly, the tumor also put pressure on the major blood vessels that carry blood from the heart to the lower part of the body.
Due to the large size of the tumor, it was decided to remove it surgically. Dr. The team of doctors led by Ashish Lal Shrestha performed the complex surgery in about three hours. Although there was a risk of injury to the vital blood vessels and surrounding organs during the surgery, the team of doctors was able to remove the tumor completely. After the surgery, Niyama’s health has improved significantly and she is ready to return home fully healthy.
Since the tumor has been completely removed, there is very little chance that the same problem will be repeated in the future or the tumor will spread again. Dr. Shrestha said. According to doctors, it is a tumor that develops congenitally in Tereto.
The exact cause of its development cannot always be identified, and doctors speculate that the problem may have been detected late because the tumor was so large that there were no obvious symptoms. Doctors said that if the treatment was not done on time, the tumor could seriously affect the development and functioning of the kidney, lungs and other organs inside the stomach. The tumor could have caused obstruction in the small intestine and could have caused problems like digestion of food and vomiting. But due to timely surgery, Niyama could be saved from such complications, according to doctors.
It is unusual for such a large tumor to be found in the stomach of a girl of this age. Dr. Shrestha said. He suspects that although the size of the tumor is increasing, there may have been a delay in coming to the hospital for treatment as there were no symptoms in the initial stage.
After the successful treatment of his daughter, Niyama’s father Nabin Rai said that he had never imagined that his daughter had such a big tumor in her stomach. He said that he was very nervous after knowing about the tumor and expressed his gratitude to the doctors and treatment team of KMC.
‘I had never imagined that my daughter had such a big tumour in her stomach. When I came to know about it, my brain didn’t work. But the team of doctors at KMC successfully performed the surgery and saved my daughter. Thank you very much to them,” he said.
The Rai family has expressed special gratitude to the doctors, nursing team and the entire treatment team of KMC after their daughter’s health improved after the successful surgery.
