11th day of Bhotekoshi floods: 1,344 bodies recovered, 5,000 missing
Kathmandu Search and rescue operations in Rasuwa, Nuwakot and Dhading are still in full swing for the 11th day today.
According to the latest information released by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs till 2 pm on Saturday, 1,344 bodies have been recovered so far and about 5,000 people are still missing. About
600 foreign nationals from 35 countries are among the missing. According to the ministry, a total of 13,098 people, including more than 300 foreigners, have been rescued alive after the disaster.
In the last 24 hours, 4 people have been rescued alive. Among them, 2 Nepalis are from the tunnel of Upper Trishuli 3 ‘A’, 1 Chinese national from Upper Trishuli 1 and 1 Nepali citizen from a house in Betrawati. Similarly, another body of one more person was recovered from the tunnel of Trishuli 3 ‘A’ on Friday.
International rescue teams and technical mobilizations have been mobilized in the tunnels of the damaged hydropower projects including Upper Trishuli 1, Upper Trishuli 3 ‘A’, 3 ‘B’, U 216, Haku, Chilime and Langtang in coordination with the Nepal Army.
Sophisticated equipment, drones and load carriers received from neighbors and friendly countries are being used to make the search operation effective. Meanwhile, a 15-member ‘DART’ team from Australia and an 11-member ‘SMART’ team from Malaysia arrived in Kathmandu on Friday morning and are deployed in the task force. So far, 24 flights have brought relief materials and rescue teams from different countries and international missions.
High-level diplomatic solidarity Prime Minister Balendra Shah and Foreign Minister Sishir Khanal have telephoned their counterparts and distinguished foreign diplomats to express their condolences and commitment for cooperation. South Korean Foreign Minister Choe Hyun is arriving in Kathmandu on Saturday evening. Nepal has requested the international community for additional support of high-capacity drones, LiDAR, bailey bridges, epidemic control equipment, DNA test kits, cadaver bags, ground penetrating radar, mobile air traffic control system and other technical materials for search, rescue and relief work.
According to the ministry, the engineering team of the Nepal Army has started the construction of a temporary bridge over the Tadi River to bring the Galchi-Trishuli road into operation. Two tuins have been brought into operation at Trishuli, Indrenighat and Devighat to ease the movement of locals.
Of the Nepalis in Kerung region of China, 155 returned home via Tatopani transit point on Friday while 127 more are in the process of returning home on Saturday.
