Agency. International journalists have visited the flood-affected Chilung port in southwest China’s Xizang Autonomous Region.
They observed the ongoing rescue operation and the progress being made in rehabilitation and reconstruction after the devastating landslide.
The Chilung port was affected on August 26 due to floods and landslides caused by the breaking of a glacier in the high Himalayan region of Nepal. As of Saturday, 43 people were killed and 519 were still missing. Journalists from various countries and regions including the United States, the UK, Russia, India, Pakistan, Singapore, Brazil visited the worst-affected areas of Chilung port on Saturday and Sunday to take stock of the situation of the disaster, ongoing rescue and rehabilitation and reconstruction progress. Bruno Falchi, a journalist for Venezuela-based Telesur, said China was stepping up rescue and relief efforts.
‘It is really commendable how fast China acts and how fast the state works to rescue its citizens and provide financial support. It was emotional to see everything change so quickly. 11 days ago, I saw this area in a state of great destruction. Now the roads are open, people are coming and now journalists are able to come and show the world what is happening here,” Falchi said.
Other journalists said they were shocked by the scale of the destruction. They said that the disaster made the need for global cooperation against climate change even more clear.
Muhammad Asghar, Associated Press of Pakistan’s correspondent for China, said, “Climate change is not the problem of any one country, it is the problem of the whole world. Collective efforts are needed to deal with this challenge. No single country can do miracles. Therefore, it is the collective responsibility of the whole world. All countries should come together and discuss and think about how to reduce the frequency of such incidents.”
Climate change is the biggest issue in the world and the whole world should make a collective effort to mitigate it. (CCTVplus)
