Demand for ‘Jagriti’ to give priority to the protection and relief of children and vulnerable groups

Kathmandu. The situation of the affected communities is still challenging even after the 13th day of the devastating disaster in the Bhotekoshi area of Rasuwa.

Jagriti Bal and Youth Concern Nepal (JCYCN), an organization working in the field of child rights and humanities, has urged all three levels of government and concerned agencies to carry out the search, rescue and relief efforts in a more effective and safe manner.

The organization has paid heartfelt tribute to those who lost their lives in the disaster of August 10 and appealed to intensify the search for the disappeared.

The organization has said that the state should immediately give priority to the protection of children who have lost their parents due to disasters and have been separated from their families.

‘As the sufferings, needs and challenges of the affected communities remain unchanged even as the disaster enters the thirteenth day, it is necessary to give high priority to the safety, protection and guarantee of fundamental rights of children, adolescents, senior citizens, persons with disabilities and other vulnerable communities along with relief and rescue operations. We urge all three tiers of government and concerned stakeholders to make urgent arrangements to ensure the education, health, nutrition, safe shelter, rehabilitation, psychosocial support, and identification of children who have lost their parents, separated from their families or are at risk due to other reasons.

Similarly, taking advantage of the uncomfortable situation after the disaster, the committee has made a special request to mobilize an effective mechanism from the local to the national level, alerting the children about the possible crimes against children.

“We urge the government to mobilize effective mechanisms from local to national levels for identifying, preventing, monitoring and protecting children from trafficking, child labour, child marriage, violence, abuse and other forms of exploitation taking advantage of the unsafe and uncomfortable situation after the disaster,” the statement reads.

The organization has drawn the attention of the government to immediately make arrangements for safe drinking water, sanitation and health services, saying there is a high risk of spread of water-borne and infectious diseases due to the garbage and dead animals in the disaster-affected areas.

The health condition of children, pregnant women, lactating women and senior citizens is very sensitive, so it has been urged to be more serious about their nutrition and health care.

The organization has expressed serious concern over the misleading and disturbing content being spread on social media during the emergency.

Jagriti Bal and Youth Concern Nepal has been carrying out relief, conservation, psychosocial and psychosocial support programs in the affected areas of Rasuwa and Nuwakot districts in coordination with international partners ONGD-FNL, ESDO Bangladesh, Caritas Germany, Peace Himalaya and local governments. In a statement issued by President Tilottam Poudel and General Secretary Deepak Sharma, we heartily appeal to the government, security agencies, civil society, development partners, private sector and all Nepali brothers and sisters to unite with the victims and affected communities in this hour of grief and sensitivity. Let us ensure the safety and protection of children and all vulnerable people by maintaining humanitarianism, cooperation and sensitivity in this hour of disaster.
