Nepali Congress Chief Whip Basna Thapa has drawn the attention of the government that the search and rescue operations have not gained the expected momentum even after more than two weeks of the devastating floods in Rasuwa.
Speaking in the House of Representatives on Wednesday, Thapa said that hundreds of families are in pain after their relatives went out of contact in the floods. She said that this is not only a natural calamity but a national crisis related to the lives of hundreds of families.
She said that Prakash Acharya, Nar Bahadur Thapa, Pabitra Kumari Budha, Mohannath Yogi, Rajendra Shahi, Krishna Bahadur Chand and many other citizens of Dailekh and Karnali are still out of contact. Thapa said, “Every minute is important now. The family not only needs assurance, but also results.” She said that 10 houses of the Badi community of Model Basti in her home district Dailekh Constituency No. 1 have been displaced due to the landslide and demanded the government to provide immediate relief, safe shelter and rehabilitation. She said that the people who have been without land ownership certificates for years are now homeless. Thapa said that the first responsibility of the government is to protect the lives of the citizens in times of national disaster and to make the families in crisis feel the presence of the state. She urged the government to immediately update the details of the incommunicado citizens and provide accurate information to the families and mobilize more human resources, technology and rescue equipment in the required areas.
“The first duty of the government is not to save the power, but to save the citizens. We should move forward with the slogan that the citizens should live and be saved,” she said.
She concluded her speech by paying tributes to BP Koirala on the occasion of BP Jayanti today.
