All those involved in the incidents of September 23 and
24 should be punished: NC President Thapa
Kathmandu Nepali Congress President Gagan Thapa has said that all those involved in the incidents of September 23 and 24 should be punished after conducting an impartial investigation.
On the occasion of the one-year anniversary of the launch of the Gen-G movement on Wednesday, Thapa said that he would not make his pain a major issue even though his house was burnt down on September 24 and his family was on fire.
He said that on September 24, many houses and public property were burnt and many families received irreparable wounds. However, he said that the burning down of his house would be secondary to the pain of the parents and injured youths who lost their children during the agitation.
Thapa claimed that there was extreme repression by the state during the peaceful agitation on September 23 and that violence was instigated by infiltrating the movement. He said that both the parties infiltrating and suppressing the movement should be identified and action should be taken.
“On September 24, there was passion and anger. But there was also a big sponsored violence using passion and anger,” Thapa said.
He said that the question should be sought as to who caused the torching and big destruction of public structures including Singha Durbar, court and other places.
‘Who was the one who burnt Singha Durbar? Who was the one who burnt the court? Who was responsible for the destruction that day? Who was the one who uplifted it? Who was the planner? Who did it? Why is no one speaking out today?’ he asked.
Thapa warned that impunity will prevail in the society if action is not taken against those involved in the incidents of September 23 and 24. He said that although the reaction expressed in an impulse can be condoned, those who commit crimes using impulsion should not be pardoned.
Recalling that the government had committed to conduct an impartial investigation into the September 24 incident after being elected, Thapa questioned where the investigation has reached. He demanded the government to make public the full report of the study on September 23, identify and take action against those who indulged in repression and violence on that day and also to punish the perpetrators of the crime on September 24.
He said, “Those who commit crimes on September 23 should also be punished, those who commit crimes on September 24 should also be punished. Only then can the state move forward on the path of becoming an accountable state.” ’
