Earthquake damages 500 households in Mustang, demands for immediate relief and reconstruction
Kathmandu. Nepali Congress lawmaker Yogesh Gauchan Thakali has drawn the attention of the government to arrange safe shelter and relief for the affected families as 300 to 500 houses have been damaged by the earthquake in Lomanthang of Mustang.
Speaking at the meeting of the House of Representatives on Thursday, lawmaker Thakali said that the tremors were felt repeatedly after the 5.3-magnitude earthquake that hit Lomanthang rural municipality-Choser area on September 7.
He said, “In the constituency of Mustang where I represent, the earthquake of 5.3 magnitude hit the center of Choser area of Lomanthang Rural Municipality on the night of September 7, tremors were felt at least eight times in the last 24 hours. Houses and physical structures have been damaged in Wards 1, 2, 3 and 3, 4 and 5 of Lomanthang Rural Municipality of Mustang. According to him, houses and physical structures have been damaged in various wards of Lomanthang Rural Municipality due to the earthquake.
According to the preliminary study of the rural municipality, about 300 to 500 households have suffered minor to severe damages. Some houses are uninhabitable and have reached a very dangerous condition. Lomanthang is a high Himalayan settlement and human civilization of historical and cultural significance, with traditional mud houses built with ramp earth technology and is also known as a living museum, Living Museum,” he said.
He said that the damaged and weakened structures have been further damaged due to the rains after the earthquake and the risk has increased in the affected areas. He said that preliminary reports have also come that schools, public structures and historical and religious heritages have also been damaged.
He also drew the attention of the government to make clear arrangements for compensation and reconstruction of the affected households on the basis of the assessment of the damage, and to take necessary steps for the protection and rehabilitation of schools and historical heritages.
