Kathmandu. As many as 24 influential central leaders of the Nepali Congress have demanded the immediate postponement of the general convention for the sake of complete unity, ending the internal strife and factionalism in the party.
Issuing a joint press release, the leaders made the call saying that the dispute within the party has had a negative impact on the national politics at a time when the country is in a serious crisis and disaster and the political system and institutions are weakening. The leaders have stressed that the leadership line should be serious to prevent the dispute from escalating or splitting the party due to the internal strife in the Nepali Congress. “The role of Gagan Thapa as the incumbent party president will be very important to elect a strong leadership and clear direction from the upcoming 15
th General Convention,” reads the statement.
The leaders have demanded the immediate postponement of the schedule of the 15th general convention issued by both sides while fulfilling their responsibilities as party presidents. The present leadership has been pressured to start decisive talks for total unity by giving up personal interests and egos, keeping the larger interest of the party at the center.
The statement concluded that the party should move ahead by uniting rather than dwelling on bittersweet experiences and differences of the past. Among the leaders who have made a public appeal to save the country and the party jointly are Mahalaxmi Upadhyay (Dina), leaders Nain Singh Mahar, Surendra Pandey, Shyam Ghimire, Jeevan Bahadur Shahi, Min Bahadur Bishwakarma, Ramhari Khatiwada and Sita Kumari Rana. Likewise, Saraswati Bajhimaya, Man Bahadur Nepali, Radha Ghale, Govinda Bhattarai, Umesh Jung Rayamajhi, Ishwori Neupane, Sita Gurung, Shanti Pariyar, Sushila Thing, Ganesh Lama, Rama Koirala Poudel, Lalit Jung Shahi, Pradip Kumar Sunuwar, Indra Bahadur Baniya and Anil Rungta have also signed the statement expressing solidarity. Mahar also urged all sides to work together to build a united and powerful Nepali Congress by resolving the disputes immediately through dialogue, consensus and collaboration at this sensitive time. Giving a brief reaction after issuing a joint statement, Mahar, who has been campaigning to unite the country and the Congress for a long time, said, “Today itself, we have met President Gagan Thapa and requested him for party unity. Separately, we have met all the top leaders of the party including Sher Bahadur Deuba, Shekhar Koirala, Purna Bahadur Khadka, Shashank Koirala and urged them to stand in favor of unity. We are firm that the country and democracy will be strong only if the Congress becomes strong,” he said. Mahar said that the main need of the hour is a united Congress.
