The study, led by New York University Langone Health, has shown a genetic link between the gene associated with the GLP-1 receptor and the hereditary hair loss (androgenetic alopecia) in men. The study, published in the Journal of Investigative Dermatology, is the first to scientifically present such a relationship.
The study found that men with genetic traits associated with high activity of the GLP-1 gene had an additional risk of hereditary hair loss by about 7 percent. The researchers found that this association persisted even after adjusting for other possible causes, such as high blood pressure, insulin resistance and testosterone levels.
According to Lynn Petukhova, the study’s senior researcher, if further research confirms this link in the future, doctors will be able to identify people at risk before prescribing GLP-1 drugs. It could also open the door to the development of combined treatments that reduce the likelihood of hair loss, she said.
Until now, the thinning of hair seen in GLP-1 drug users was seen as a temporary effect of rapid weight loss. But a new study suggests that there may be a genetic factor involved.
However, the researchers clarified that this study did not conclude that GLP-1 drugs directly cause hair loss. They say that more research is needed on how GLP-1 activity affects hair roots and whether this relationship applies to women as well.
The use of these drugs is increasing rapidly in the United States.
According to the survey cited in the study, about 12 percent of Americans have used GLP-1 drugs only for weight loss, and their prescriptions have more than tripled since Ozempic was approved in 2020. ANI
