‘Regulatory bodies should be effective to resolve the complexities seen in the telecommunications sector’
Kathmandu. Chairman of Nepal Telecommunication Authority Arjun Ghimire has said that the regulatory body should make its role more effective to resolve the complexities seen in the telecommunication sector.
Speaking at a press conference organized on Thursday, Chairman Ghimire said that the NEA has been making its activities and service related issues public to make the service providers responsible towards the service. He said that if the telecommunication service is not systematic, it will have a direct impact on the general consumers.
He said that the NEA should be serious about the quality and management of service as they are also consumers.
He said, “Now the telecommunication service has become essential. If we do not take this essential service in a systematic way, then we will suffer from it. From the point of view of the consumer, there is a need to work seriously to make the service a little more systematic.” Ghimire said that there have been various challenges in the telecom sector of Nepal in recent times. He said that in the past, there were 6 operators of voice service, but now it has been limited to two. He said that the number of Internet Service Providers (ISPs) has increased.
He said that the total income of the telecommunication sector is decreasing and even though the income from data has increased, the income from voice service is decreasing.
He said that the authority needs to collaborate with the media to inform the general consumers about the activities and problems of the telecommunication sector. He said that the media should play the role of a ‘watchdog’ to monitor the work of the Authority.
Ghimire said that the media should also be alerted if there is any pressure or influence during the work of the NRA. Chairman Ghimire also said that the NRA has planned to inform the media about its work every month.
