Jitiya festival being celebrated in Mithilanchal

Janakpur. The Jitiya festival, which is celebrated by the Maithili and Tharu communities in the Madhes Province and Mithilanchal region, has begun from today.

Jitiya Varta is considered to be the most stringent of the fasts celebrated by the Mithilanis. In this three-day festival, the fasting women wake up early in the morning, eat Ongan (curd, beaten rice, sugarcane, bananas) and fast till Sunday evening.

This fast is considered to be a strict fast because it is believed that if the fasting women burp or cough with their mouth or bite their tongue, then the fast will fail.

The Jitiya festival, which is celebrated for the long life of children, the birth of a son, and family happiness and peace, has religious and cultural significance. Every woman who has a son in the Mithila region performs this festival.

It is customary to go to the river, pond, pond and take a bath in the evening before the sun sets. In the evening, to listen to the story of Jitmahan, the necessary worship materials like banana, beaten rice, curd, sugar, etc. gather in a place in the village and listen to the story of Jitmahan.

On the second day of the fast, it is customary to wake up early in the morning and make a bow by tying bel leaves based on the number of brothers, taking a bath in the river with zakur (meat dishes), worship items.

After bathing in the river and worshiping, it is customary for the devotees to go home and eat curd, beaten rice, banana, sugar, milk plastered with cow dung in the kitchen. After the fasting woman has eaten, it is customary for the family to eat the dishes. The Jitiya festival has kept the family and society together.
