Kathmandu. The opening of the Beni-Jomsom road has come to a halt as the machines of the Department of Roads have not been able to move forward for the past three days due to the structure in front of the Rahughat Hydropower Project and the electricity tower. According to the department, the machines of the road department can be moved forward only after the construction of the gabion wall and removal of the electricity tower from the project is completed.
Vehicular movement has been affected due to landslides and road erosion at various places along the Beni-Jomsom road section of the Maldhunga-Beni-Jomsom-Korala road. According to the Department of Roads, it is estimated that the road will be brought into operation within seven days if the obstruction at Rahughat is removed and the machines are mobilized.
Rahughat Hydropower Project is constructing a gabion wall to protect its structure on the road side. In addition, the work of removing the electric towers at the required place for the road expansion is also being done. Due to these works, the machines of the road department have not been able to move forward from Rahughat.
The technicians and staff of the road project are sitting at the same place and waiting for the machine to move forward, according to the department. As the machine could not move forward from Rahughat, further work could not be done in the damaged areas from then to Tatopani.
According to the Department, the machines of the Department of Roads can be mobilized if the project completes the construction of gabion wall and removal of electricity towers by this afternoon.
After that, the target is to open the road in about seven days by mobilizing the available machines and manpower. However, if the obstruction of Rahughat is not removed immediately, the time of opening the road will be uncertain, the department said.
The road has been completely or partially damaged at various places along the Beni-Jomsom road section. According to the department, the road has collapsed at two places in Ratopani, making it impossible for pedestrians to walk. The road near Bhirkate has also been damaged.
About
100 meters of the road near Begkhola has been completely eroded. More landslides have occurred at the place where landslides had occurred earlier in Banseri. According to the department, additional construction and removal of landslides is necessary for the operation of roads in these areas.
Traffic has been restored by constructing ‘backcutting’ and supporting walls in the area where the road has been cut in the Tatopani area. The construction of the approach of the Pokhrebazar bridge is also being done.
Meanwhile, the road from Ghasa to Korala under the Maldhunga-Beni-Jomsom-Korala road has been removed and two-way traffic has been reopened. However, due to the damaged areas along the Beni-Ghasa section, there is a problem in the operation of regular transport.
Although machines have been deployed in various places to open the roads, the work has been affected due to lack of fuel, according to the department. The resumption of the damaged roads has been delayed as the machines of the road department could not be deployed in the required places.
The Beni-Jomsom road is the main road connecting Myagdi and Mustang to Korala border point of China. The road blockade has affected the transportation of daily essentials, construction materials and other goods. According to the Department of Roads, removing the obstruction at Rahughat has become the main necessity to carry out works at the damaged areas of Beni-Jomsom section even though the two-way road from Ghasa to Korala has come into operation.
