Kathmandu. Former Prime Minister and leader of the Communist Party of Nepal (CPN), Jhalanath Khanal, has announced a ‘Socialist Awakening Campaign’ after quitting the party.
Addressing a press conference in Kathmandu on Monday, Khanal announced his separation from the party and launched the ‘Socialist Awareness Campaign’. The first meeting of the Khanal-led campaign has also passed 15 different resolutions. He said that the campaign has been announced with the aim of restructuring the communist movement ideologically.
It was decided to hold a meeting on Saturday under his leadership. The decision passed by the same meeting and the campaign were made public through a press conference on Monday.
Recalling the situation during the formation of the party, Khanal said, “I was the happiest when the NCP was formed. I thought that this party would transform itself. We had hoped that the way we had been telling the people while building the party, it would be fulfilled.” He said that the party could not work as per the people’s expectations and even the parliament with a two-thirds majority would be dissolved.
‘But the time came to dissolve even the parliament with a two-thirds majority. Even after that, the party was not able to implement the policies and programs in a people-oriented manner. The party does not have close relations with the people and it will inevitably face defeat on all sides,” he said.
Khanal said that there was no alternative to socialism and all the leftist forces should be brought together.
He said, “Now there is no other option to go to socialism. Therefore, we are starting this campaign to bring all the leftists together by launching a socialist awakening campaign.” He said that the campaign was to unite all the communists in the country.
“The campaign is to unite all the communists in the country. It is to get rid of the right-wing incitement that is now dominating,” he said.
Claiming that the campaign would play a role in unifying the communist movement in Nepal, he said, “This campaign will be forgotten only by unifying the communist movement of Nepal.”
