KATHMANDU — Nepali Congress (NC) President Gagan Thapa has said that there is no need for all leaders to contest for the party’s central committee in the party’s 15th general convention.
Talking to media persons after filing his nomination papers on Tuesday, Thapa urged the leaders who want to lead the local level or province level not to compete for the central committee right now.
He said, “If anyone wants to take the leadership of the local government tomorrow, wants to be the mayor and deputy mayor, wants to go and work in the province, please don’t stand here in the central committee now. Because even if you win, there is no chance of your friend in the central committee after that.” Even if you compete or lose, it is not necessary that everyone should compete because there is merit in the central committee. We will go to create space for everyone in the coming days. Thapa urged the leaders of both the senior and new generation of the party to think about the competition and create space for everyone in the coming days.
He said that he has played a role in creating a level playing field for all the leaders who have participated in the special convention and those who have not participated. He said that he wants the leaders who did not participate in the special convention to have equal opportunities to compete in the leadership of the party.
Thapa said the expansion of the central committee was also aimed at ensuring the representation of different communities.
He said that the structure has been designed to accommodate different clusters as the representation of Dalits, Madhesis and other communities may decrease if more representatives come from open groups.
He said that the provision of ensuring at least one woman in the post of vice-president was also aimed at inclusive representation.
Thapa said that the competition within the party should be taken as normal and friendly. Stating that he had faced both victory and defeat in the party’s internal competition in the past, he said that the political journey would not end with a defeat.
He said that he has been personally urging important leaders of the party to be associated with various posts. He said that he has talked to Dr. Minendra Rijal, Min Bishwakarma and other leaders.
According to Thapa, according to the new statute, the responsibilities of the general secretaries have also been divided. He said that one general secretary has been assigned the responsibility of looking after the organization, another the office and the other political affairs.
