Rich countries should compensate for the crisis Nepal has faced due to climate change: Youth

Kathmandu. Youths have said that carbon emissions against the human interest of rich countries have led to disasters like the Bhotekoshi floods.

In an interaction held in the capital on Thursday, they also said that they should seek compensation from countries including the US, Russia, China and India. Climate experts and youths speaking at an interaction on ‘Youth Generation Campaign to Solve Climate Crisis’ organized by Revolutionary Youth Association Nepal said that all should come together to protect the common planet. Standing committee member of the Revolutionary Communist Party of Nepal, Ram Singh Shrees, accused the capitalist system of exploiting the earth for profit and domination in the world.

He said that nature cannot be protected by the capitalist system as the capitalist countries have played a major role in carbon emission against human interest. He said that the capitalist system should be abolished and the struggle for a scientific socialist system should be done.

Presenting a working paper, Dorchi Sherpa, central coordinator of Revolutionary Youth Association Nepal, said that climate justice is not only a question of economic gain or compensation, but it is also a step towards equality, environmental justice, sustainable development, responsibility towards nature and survival of future generations. Environment and climate expert Dr. Binod Bhatta said that conservation of nature is the main challenge of the world. Dr.

Madan Sigdel, associate professor at the Central Department of Water and Meteorology at Tribhuvan University, said that the budget allocated by the state for the study and research of climate change was not enough as the existence of the human race was at risk.

Likewise, geologist Prakash Chandra Ghimire, assistant professor at Pulchowk Engineering Campus, said that climate change should be included in the curriculum to save the earth. Jhanak Shrestha and Govinda Kafle, office members of the organization, stressed on the need for youths from all over the world to unite and struggle to reduce the damage caused by climate change. On the occasion, National Youth Association Nepal central president Maharaj Gurung, YCL Nepal’s central president Pushpa Oli, youth organization Nepal’s Narendra Si, People’s Force president Jibendra Nilgagan, Scientific Socialist Youth League’s Himangshu, Labour and Culture Youth Nepal’s spokesperson, Ribal Bantawa Rai and Suparna Lama, among others, stressed on the need of united struggle for climate justice.
