Kathmandu. Nepali Congress President Gagan Thapa has proposed to make arrangements for voting from all the wards across the country to elect the party president from the upcoming general convention.
Talking to media persons outside the National Assembly Hall, the polling venue for the general convention, he said that the tradition of holding voting by bringing all the general convention delegates together to elect the party’s leadership should be made final. He expressed the view that with the development of technology and connectivity, the party members across the country should now be able to elect the party president by voting from their own ward.
‘So I have proposed that we should not come together and elect the party president from next time. Wherever we eight to nine lakh friends are, let us vote in our respective wards, so let’s elect the president,” he said.
Thapa said that both candidates and voters get tired when the NC conducts elections up to seven levels. He said that in the past, due to lack of technology and connectivity, we were compelled to adopt such an election system, but now the situation has changed.
He said that the current electoral system is expensive and competition at different levels will create a situation within the party to defeat each other. Therefore, he stressed that the election process of the party should be made timely.
Thapa also stressed the need to move ahead by incorporating all those who had contested in the current general convention.
He said that since both the winners and losers of the elections are friends within the Congress, the losers should also be given responsibility and added to the party. “This is an election, there is a healthy competition between us. The losers and winners are the friends within us. Our challenge is very big,” he said.
He also clarified that various panels or groups have been formed by adding their names to the election.
Thapa said that various lists are being made in his name and urged people not to believe that he made all of them.
‘I have 28 lists in my name. Don’t believe that I made all those lists,’ he said.
