Sixteen Shraddha concludes, today Aunsi Shraddha
Kathmandu. The sixteen shraddha performed in memory of the departed ancestors is concluding today with the new moon tithi. On the last day of Pitru Paksha, which started from Ashwin Krishna Pratipada, shraddha is being performed today in the name of the departed ancestors.
The Aunsi Shraddha performed on the last day of Pitru Paksha is taken with special importance. There is a scriptural belief that a person who is unable to perform Shraddha on other dates of Pitru Paksha for any reason should perform Shraddha today.
If shraddha cannot be performed even today, then shraddha can be performed from Ashwin Shukla Pratipada to Panchami. If it is not done even during this period, it is a classical belief that shraddha can be performed on the day of Kartik Krishna Aunsi i. e. Lakshmi Puja.
Devotees throng the pilgrimage sites including Gokarneshwor, Uttargaya, Nuwakot and Rasuwa in the Kathmandu Valley for religious rituals performed in the name of ancestors.
In Pitru Paksha, Shraddha is performed on 15 dates from Ashwin Krishna Pratipada to Amavasya and on the 16th tithi of Ashwin Shukla Pratipada, it is called Sixteen Shraddha. Matamaha i. e. the shraddha of the mother’s father is performed on the day of Ashwin Shukla Pratipada.
With the conclusion of the sixteen shraddhas, the main festival of Hindu Nepalis has begun. Durga Paksha or Bada Dashain will begin with Ghatasthapana on October 25.
