Kathmandu. Nepali Congress (NC) 15th general convention candidate Shyam Krishna Khadgi has urged newly-elected President Gagan Kumar Thapa to move ahead by incorporating all aspects of the party.
Congratulating Thapa and other office-bearers and members who were elected to the post of party president from the general convention, Khadgi stressed the need to give priority to the protection of internal democracy, rules and statutes and unity.
Addressing a press conference on Monday, Khadgi said that the main objective of his candidature is to protect the internal democracy of the party. He said that although the decision to contest for the post of president during his four-decade-long political journey was challenging, it has established the importance of competitive democratic practices within the party.
Stating that in the history of the Nepali Congress, leadership was chosen through internal competition, he said defeat and victory in the election should be taken naturally. He pledged to strengthen the party, protect the rules and statutes and support the party president in his positive steps irrespective of the election results. Khadgi stressed the need to end the misunderstanding that emerged in the party during the special general convention and the regular general convention. He said that the main responsibility of the new working committee is to bring the leaders and cadres who are on the path of a separate general convention into the mainstream of the party through dialogue, consensus and respect. He also pledged to support Thapa to end the division in the party before the local level elections. Addressing the newly-
elected President Thapa, Khadgi urged him to move ahead equally by including all those who voted for him and those who did not.
Stating that no one holding different views should feel alienated in the party, he said the success of the leadership would not only be on winning the election but also on winning the trust of the leaders and cadres having different views. Expressing the view that the Nepali Congress should be raised above factionalism and division, Khadgi said that ideological groups and healthy competition should always be kept open within the party. According to him, the party should be given priority over individual and faction and unity over competition to make the party strong, united and trustworthy of the people. Khadgi has expressed gratitude to all the delegates of the general convention and all those who directly or indirectly supported him to enliven the democratic practice by participating in the election. “The outcome of the election will not affect our close relations, trust and cooperation,” he said.
Wishing Thapa a successful tenure, Khadgi said that party unity is more than personal defeat, relationship is more than position and ideology is more than interest. He called on all the leaders and cadres to move ahead unitedly for the bright future of the Nepali Congress.
