14 companies have been fined Rs 50,000 each for selling internet services against the approved standards
. The Nepal Telecommunication Authority (NTA) has imposed a fine of Rs 50,000 each on 14 service provider companies for selling internet services against the approved standards. Action was taken against these companies as per Section 47 (1) of the Telecommunication Act, 2053 after it was proved that they violated the directives and license conditions of the Authority.
According to a press release issued by the NTA, during the inspection and inquiry, some service providers were found not providing the internet service as per the approved package, charging more than the fixed fee and selling the packages by making different packages from the approved packages. According to NTA spokesperson Min Prasad Aryal, action has also been taken against the service providers operating packages without approval and not informing the service recipients about such packages on time.
The authority has said that not providing the service according to the approved internet speed and package and charging more than the approved rate is against the interest of the consumers. Spokesperson Aryal said that the fine has been imposed to control such activities.
The companies fined include Broadlink Network and Communication, Classic Tech, Web Surfer Nepal Communication System, Fiberworld Communications, Vianet Communications, Aeronet, Dish Media Network, Wi-Fi Nepal, CG Communications, WorldLink Communications, First Link Communication, Pokhara Internet, Techminds Network and Subisu.
The Authority has directed the concerned service providers to immediately stop the internet packages and charges operated without approval and inform them about it. If the customer has suffered any loss due to such activities, then the compensation or compensation should be paid on the basis of the customer’s demand.
According to the authority, the service provider should submit it for approval at least three months in advance, mentioning the proposed rate and the date of implementation as per the tariff determination guidelines. However, some service providers have not followed this provision. The Authority has warned all the licensed telecommunication service providers not to take approval before implementing any service package or tariff and not to operate the package without approval.
No fee increased Authority’s clarification
Earlier, on October 10, the authority had clarified that the fee for internet service had not been increased. It had said that no proposal to increase the fee was received from the service provider and the authority had not given approval to increase the fee.
In the meantime, the authority had warned of taking action against the provider charging more than the approved rate and operating the service unauthorizedly causing inconvenience to the consumers. The Authority has urged the service recipients to file a complaint if they are found charging more than the approved rate or operating the service illegally and violating the rights and interests of the consumers. Emphasizing that the service providers should follow the prevailing laws, rules and conditions of the license, the authority said that such provision has been made to protect the interests of the consumers and to maintain fair competition.
