I made a big mistake by not being a member of any political party: Dr. Surendra KC
Surendra KC stresses that writers should include the situation of society and nation in their writings
Kathmandu. Political analyst and professor Dr. Surendra KC said that writers should incorporate the pain and contemporary situation of the society, nation and citizens in their writings. He made the remark while addressing the Global Author Award 2026, an international literary event organized in Kathmandu on Sunday. Speaking at the programme organised under the slogan ‘Festival of Cross-Border Literature’, KC stressed the need for literary sector to contribute to social and national transformation.
He said, “Writers should incorporate the pain and contemporary situation of the society, nation and citizens in their writings. Literature should not be limited only to creation, it should also contribute to the transformation of the society and the nation. The distortions, anomalies and frustrations of the citizens seen in the country should be exposed through writing and raise their voice for reform.” Writers should be able to convey the message of positive thinking and change in the society through their creations. He said that there is a tendency in Nepal for only a limited number of people to get various opportunities and responsibilities and a culture should be developed to ensure that everyone gets opportunities on the basis of merit. He also shared his experience that he was deprived of various opportunities because he was not a member of any political party.
Stating that he has written at least 25 to 28 books, got his PhD and has published more than 4,000 articles and writings and has given more than 20,
000 interviews, KC said his identity is linked to independent writing and expression.
He said, “There is a ready-made tradition in Nepal, the same person reaches different positions and opportunities again and again, others do not get the opportunity. We should develop a culture of getting opportunities on the basis of merit. I wrote 27-28 books, did PhD, wrote more than 4,000 articles and gave more than 20,000 interviews. But my biggest mistake was not being a member of any political party. The main basis of my expression, writing and identity is freedom. He stressed that fairness and merit should be given priority in the distribution of awards, honors and opportunities. He said that if a deserving person is given a proper place, the society will automatically respect it. KC recalled the philosophy of peace and coexistence given by Gautam Buddha and said that there was a need for peace, tolerance and harmony in the present society. Stating that dissatisfaction with justice, police, politics and other public institutions was increasing in the society, he said such issues should be reflected in literature and writings as well.
Eminent writers and personalities from different countries of the world are participating in the program. Awards were also distributed in various categories on the occasion.
The event was led by Sheetal Khadka, Founder of Infinity Services Pvt. Ltd. and 45 eminent personalities from Nepal, India, USA, Singapore, Fiji, Canada, Bangladesh and United Arab Emirates (UAE).
