We are continuing the old projects rather than the new ones: MP Gajurel

Kathmandu. Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) lawmaker Ashish Gajurel said that the government is continuing the good and incomplete projects initiated by the previous governments instead of starting new projects.

Speaking at a program organized at the Reporters’ Club on Sunday, Gajurel said that maintaining good governance, accelerating development and strengthening Nepal’s economy were the main agenda of his party.

He said, “We have started our political journey with the slogan of good governance, development. The main agenda of our party is to maintain good governance, develop and strengthen Nepal economically. Even today, we are committed to the same thing.” He said that reforms were being carried out in various areas of the state and some reforms have already been carried out and some are in the process. He said that the government was moving towards making maximum use of the development projects initiated by the previous governments and completing the under-construction projects.

He said, “We are making maximum use of whatever development the previous government has done.

We are finalizing all those that are in the construction phase. We are working in that direction to take many sick industries to their destinations. He said that the government has continued the old projects rather than the new projects this time. He said that the good work done by the previous government has been respected and taken forward.

“For this time, we are continuing the previous project rather than our new project. That means we have respected the good work that has been done in the past. It shows that we respect it and we will continue it. We have been in charge of this state machinery for seven months,” he said.

Sharing his experience of working in the development sector for a long time, Gajurel said that in the past, the personal expertise of the leaders used to dominate while selecting development projects. He said that some of the projects selected in this way did not give the expected financial returns.

Giving the example of view tower constructed in Jhapa, he said that the return to be obtained from investment in development projects should be given priority.

He said, “I don’t say that there was no development in the past, but in the past, there was a process of selecting projects, which was the selection of projects on the basis of the leader’s own experience. It did not contribute to economic development.”

That’s why it could not yield results. Raising the issue of spending around three billion rupees on the construction of the view tower in Jhapa, he said that the construction of the structure is not the only development.

“Now looking outside, a project was made, but it could not be used. It could not help our economy. The view tower has been built, but how much return did the view tower give? If we had invested in the place where the same return, today the state would have produced and the money would have come to the state from that production,” he said.

Gajurel has been of the view that economic returns and production should be given priority over political interests while selecting development projects.
