Cabinet meeting unveils decisions, sets up Property Investigation Commission

Kathmandu. The government has formed a commission to investigate the properties of former high-ranking officials and office-bearers of political parties. A meeting of the Council of Ministers held on Wednesday decided to form a commission under the convenorship of former justice of the Supreme Court Rajendra Kumar Bhandari.

Other members of the commission are former justices Chandiraj Dhakal and Purushottam Parajuli, former Deputy Inspector General of Police Ganesh KC and chartered accountant Prakash Lamsal. Government spokesperson and Education Minister Sasmit Pokharel made public the decisions made public by the meeting. The commission has been formed to collect, verify and investigate the property details of the chief political office-bearers and high-ranking employees holding public posts since 2062/63 BS, he said.

The meeting also decided to accept the Swiss government grant equivalent to 1 million Swiss Franc for the investigation on enforced disappeared persons, truth and reconciliation fund. Likewise, it has been decided to assign the responsibility of the Inter-Tariff Officer to the employees of different levels under the Inland Revenue Department as per their jurisdiction while the Financial Procedures and Financial Responsibility (Third Amendment) Regulations, 2082 have been approved.

The National Standard on Organization and Management Survey, 2082 has also been approved. The meeting also decided to submit an agreement on mutual legal assistance in criminal matters between the Government of Nepal and the Government of the Republic of India for information in the House of Representatives. Likewise, another committee has been formed under the coordination of former High Court Justice Prem Raj Karki to study the security mechanism for the implementation of the report of the investigation report of the incident that took place on September 7 and 24, 2082. The other members of the committee are APF former DIG Subodh Adhikari and former Additional Inspector General of Nepal Police Tek Prasad Rai.

Earlier, the government led by Prime Minister Balendra Shah had decided to form a property probe committee with the objective of controlling corruption and ending impunity as part of governance reforms. The commission formed by the government has stated that an impartial investigation would be carried out on the basis of legal standards and evidences and the reports and recommendations received would be implemented through the bodies concerned.
