Kathmandu. Nepali Congress President Gagan Thapa has strongly criticized the working style of the incumbent government. Addressing a program organized by Nepal Trade Union on Friday, Thapa said that the landless squatters in different parts of the Kathmandu Valley have been treated like war and criminals.
“They are installing bulldozers in many settlements in Kathmandu. The people who live on the banks of the river. Many of them have lied to the state. The law gives the government the right to punish and remove them. But our constitution and law have said that the squatters should not be allowed to live on the banks of the river, but they should have the right to live somewhere else. It’s going to be empty. But when the government thinks within the ambit of the law, it cannot dare to treat its citizens like war and criminals. ’
He also said that when the Congress was silent for some time, no one else spoke and they had to fulfill their responsibility to speak. He said that the time has come to break the Congress fast of not speaking.
“You are asking me and the Congress why you are keeping quiet. If we don’t speak for a while, it will be the search for the truth in the midst of our silence. When we are not speaking, we are not saying that no one else will speak. But for the past few days, I’ve been wondering if the questions are going to die when we sit down and don’t talk. So the time has come to break the fast of not talking. When we don’t speak, we have to fulfill the responsibility of saying that someone else will speak. ’
Stating that the NC was humble but not weak, he warned the government not to consider it as a weakness of humility. Pointing out that although the government has a clear majority, it was being misused, he said, adding that arbitrariness cannot be done in the name of majority in a democratic system.
“We request the government not to underestimate our humility,” he said. We are humble, but we are not weak. We are determined, but our legitimate voices must be heard. This government has a clear majority but is in a dangerous misconception. The rule of law and the rule of law sound the same. Both the government and the government are deceived. But that’s a different matter. In a democracy, there is the rule of law. The government is a servant of the law. If the rule of law is accepted, the process does not seem complicated. If we say that we have a majority, this law is nothing, then the process will be lengthy. And problems arise. ’
Commenting on the ordinance brought by the government, Thapa stressed that it should have a constitutional basis. According to him, although the government has the right to bring ordinances if necessary, it should not be misused.
“The government can bring an ordinance. We also brought it yesterday. But there is also a basis for that. The Constitution gives the authority, sometimes the executive to act as needed. But there is a basis for that. This government has come to do new work. He thinks that he will rule by law, I have the right to change the law, I will change it, I will hit him, this is another example. I’m worried that the way things are going, it’s not going to go in the right place. If I want, I will make laws. I don’t want to make it if I don’t want to. ’
