Kathmandu. Thailand’s cabinet on Tuesday decided to scrap the 60-day visa-free entry facility available to tourists from 93 countries and territories, making major changes to visa waiver policies. According to the Thai Foreign Ministry, the new provision has been implemented to make the entry process more systematic and strong, taking into account national security, tourism economy and diplomatic interoperability.

The policy will come into effect 15 days after it is published in the official Royal Gazette. Munkorn Pratumkau, director general of the Department of Consular Affairs, said at a press conference that from now on, only one visa waiver scheme will be implemented for each country or territory to eliminate duplication in visa facilities. He said that the 60-day visa waiver granted to 93 countries has been completely abolished.

Similarly, the government has reduced the number of countries eligible for a 30-day visa exemption from 57 to 54. This 30-day facility will henceforth be used only for tourism purposes.

The cabinet also announced a new 15-day visa waiver scheme for citizens of three countries. In addition, the visa-on-arrival program has also been drastically cut. Earlier, 31 countries and regions were getting this facility, but now it has been limited to just four, said Director General Pratumkau.
