Interference on democracy and federalism in the name of constitution amendment unacceptable: Aryan Rai

Kathmandu. Labour and Culture Party lawmaker Aryan Rai warned of protesting if any attempt was made to interfere with democracy, federalism and secularism in the name of constitution amendment. Speaking at the meeting of the House of Representatives on Monday, lawmaker Rai said that it would not be appropriate to try to tamper with the basic provisions of the constitution over the issue of scrapping the provinces.

“The misadventure of the incumbent government tampering with democracy, federalism and secularism in the name of scrapping provinces in the name of constitution amendment,” he said. If the constitution is to be ratified, then the rights of one-third of women are guaranteed in the constitution, it should be increased to 50 percent. ’

Stressing the need of increasing one-third women’s representation guaranteed in the constitution to 50 per cent, he said the rights of indigenous nationalities, Dalits, Madhesi, Muslims, Tharu and other backward communities should be amended to make them more effective.

“The constitution promulgated in 2072 has suppressed the rights of the student workers who uplift the backward communities like indigenous nationalities, Dalits, Madhes, Muslims, Tharus. The constitution should be amended to restore their rights,” he said.

He also said that there would be protests if the democratic system was tampered with in the name of constitution amendment.

“If democracy is tampered with in the name of constitution amendment, the rulers living in Singha Durbar will be opposed,” he said. ’
