Kathmandu. Royalist activist and medical practitioner Durga Prasai was taken into custody by police from Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA) while he was returning to Kathmandu from Jhapa on Monday.
On Sunday, Prasai said that he would address the problems of landless squatters, incidents of self-immolation, the plight of the poor and victims, among other contemporary national issues after his arrival in Kathmandu from Jhapa.
A team led by Superintendent of Police (SP) Pawan Bhattarai took him under control soon after he arrived at the airport. After this, police took Prasai to his residence in Bhaktapur in his vehicle.
After the incident, some online media reported that Prasai had been arrested, but the police refuted it.
Talking to Nepal News Bank, SP Bhattarai, spokesperson of the Kathmandu Police Range, said that Prasai has not been arrested. He was taken under control and taken home for security and management as protest programmes are not allowed in a prohibited area like airport, he said.
“We didn’t make any arrests. He was going to organize a protest program in a prohibited area like the airport. That’s why we left him at home. It’s just facilitation,” SP Bhattarai said.
Police said that Prasain has been removed from the prohibited area keeping in mind the security sensitivities as no demonstration or program can be held.
