41 billion investment required for the construction of electricity transmission line in 5 years

Kathmandu.Executive Director of Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA) Longevity Kumar Shrestha said that Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA) will need investment of Rs 41 billion in the next five years. Addressing a program organized by the Association of Economic Journalists Nepal (NAFIJ) here today, Shrestha said investment of Rs 41 billion was necessary in the next five years for the construction of transmission lines.

He said that electricity has been distributed to 98 percent of the households and there are more than 5.91

6 lakh customers at present.

According to him, there is a problem in the distribution of compensation and land acquisition.

Stating that hydropower production alone was not enough, he said a robust, reliable and modern transmission system was the basis for Nepal’s energy security, economic transformation and prosperity.

Currently, 4,

130 MW of electricity is being generated, he said. By 2035, the target is to reach 28,500 MW. The five-year strategy includes removing bottlenecks in the short-term strategy, structural reforms in the medium-term strategy, and building a 400 kV backbone and a smart grid in the long-term strategy. Stating that the actual economic return of Nepal’s hydropower potential is not enough, he said that the 400 KV transmission network can be operated without any technical agreement.

He said that the next step is to remove various types of obstacles, implement the

Act and standards, and build an efficient institutional system to ensure the smooth flow of energy.
