International cooperation should be strengthened to control transnational crime: IGP Karki
Kathmandu Inspector General of Police (IGP) Dan Bahadur Karki has stressed the need for further consolidating international cooperation, information exchange and partnership among police organizations to control trans-border crimes.
After returning home after representing Nepal in the Fifth United Nations Chiefs’ Summit (UNCOPS) held at the UN headquarters in New York, Minister Poudel said that extensive discussions were held on the expansion of bilateral and multilateral cooperation, use of technology, capacity building of police personnel and measures to control transnational crime. IGP Karki said, “We have felt the need for international cooperation and coordination, and other countries have also felt this need.
We also discussed on the issues of information sharing, use of technology, capacity building of police personnel and strengthening partnership for controlling transnational crimes. Stating that Nepal has been collaborating with the international community as a responsible partner, he reiterated the commitment to make use of modern technology, research capacity development, community-police partnership and collaboration with international bodies more effective.
According to Karki, the UN Police Chiefs’ Summit has become an important forum for Nepal Police to learn from global best practices, share experiences and identify new opportunities for future collaboration.
The knowledge, skills and experience gained would be utilized to make Nepal’s public security, peace and law and order more effective, he added.

IGP Karki said that the government had discussed the issue of increasing the participation of Nepal Police in the UN peacekeeping missions in various bilateral and multilateral meetings. According to him, the Armed Police Force has reached Level 3 of the Formed Police Unit (FPU) while the Nepal Police is in Level-2. He added that there is a possibility of Nepal Police reaching Level-3 if necessary resources are managed.
