Ministry of Health prepares to produce 36 types of essential medicines within two years

. KATHMANDU: The Ministry of Health and Food Hygiene is preparing to produce 36 types of essential medicines from the Nepal Drugs Limited within the next two years with an aim to strengthen domestic medicine production. 

For this, the Ministry has already started the process to sign a memorandum of understanding between the Ministry and Nepal Drugs Limited. Currently, Nepal Drugs Limited is producing 11 types of essential medicines.

Nepal Drugs Limited is also planning to produce medicines for chronic diseases including high blood pressure and diabetes in the next phase. 

For this, necessary research and development, quality testing, production permission and technical preparations will be expedited. The Ministry is preparing to adopt a policy to manage the budget required for the effective implementation of the programme and to give priority to domestic production in the supply of essential medicines to the government health institutions. After the implementation of

the MoU, the Ministry of Health and Food Hygiene and Nepal Drugs Limited will make arrangements for the purchase of medicines required by the government health institutions through an easy, regular and institutional system. 

This is expected to make the government procurement process more effective and help in the market expansion and ensure the utilization of medicines produced by Nepal Drugs Limited. The Ministry has stated that the quality of all the medicines produced by Nepal Drugs Limited will be ensured in accordance with national and international standards. According to the Ministry, the initiative will strengthen the government’s long-term goal of promoting domestic pharmaceutical industry, increasing self-reliance on medicines, reducing dependence on imports and ensuring regular availability of quality and affordable essential medicines to the people.
