. KATHMANDU — Prime Minister Balendra Shah has directed the bodies concerned to put in place a system of certification of organic agriculture products in the country.
He had called the office-bearers of the Organic Association Nepal, an umbrella organization of organic agriculture entrepreneurs, at the Office of the Prime Minister and Council of Ministers in Singha Durbar for a discussion today.
On the occasion, the office-bearers of the committee called for the establishment of an internationally accredited certification agency in Nepal under the control of the government as the provision of international certification in organic production was very expensive, and the Prime Minister said that he would immediately address it.
Similarly, the officials had demanded to resume the 75 percent subsidy provided by the government for certification as it is expensive to certify organic products internationally. Prime Minister Shah was positive about providing the grant until an international standard certification agency was established in Nepal.
The Prime Minister said that the government would take necessary steps for the promotion of organic agriculture by controlling the use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides. The meeting was attended by Deepak Baskota, president of the association, Shanta Baskota Koirala, president of Gorkha Tea Estate, Udaya Chapagain, chairman of Himalayan Shangri-La Tea Factory, Kamal Mainali, chairman of Annapurna Organic Agro Industry and Farshuram Acharya, chairman of Annapurna Organic Agro Industry.
