agency. India’s Supreme Court has agreed to hear on July 27 a plea alleging that police used excessive force against students protesting at Jantar Mantar and other parts of the country over the question paper leak.
The matter was taken up by Chief Justice Surya Kant and Justices Joyalya Bagchi and V. K.
Senior advocate Gopal Sankaranarayanan told a bench headed by Mohan that two petitions have been filed in connection with the alleged violence against the protesters.
Sankaranarayanan said the petitions pertained to alleged police violence during the student protests and various states were made parties to it.
He said that the reason those applications were not mentioned earlier was that he was in the process of getting the registration number.
Stressing the need for an immediate hearing of the case, he said that there have been continuous reports of police using excessive force on the students and the immediate intervention of the court is needed to stop it.
In view of his statement, the Chief Justice agreed to accept the petitions for hearing and directed them to be listed for Monday.
The Chief Justice said, “Put it on the list, we will hear it.” “
On July 20, the agitation to the parliament and the Cockroach Janata Party staged a week-long demonstration and hunger strike at Jantar Mantar.
Thousands of students participated in the demonstration.
They staged a demonstration in the parliament demanding the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan over the question paper leak and sweeping reforms in the examination system.
Security forces used tear gas and batons to disperse the crowd as they tried to break through various police barricades in central Delhi as they marched towards Parliament. Several videos on social media claimed that protesters were abused by police. The Delhi Police, however, defended its action and said that the force was used only after some mob members turned violent and started pelting stones. On July 20, police used pellet guns during a student protest at Jantar Mantar in Delhi. The charges were confirmed after a medical report from the hospital indicated pellet injuries were found on the body of one of the protesters.
