. KATHMANDU: The Joint Continuing Medical Education (CME) program was organized to further strengthen the collaboration between HAMS Hospital in Nepal and Max Super Speciality Hospital of India.
During
the program, senior doctors from both the hospitals shared experiences on advanced treatment technology, complex disease management and latest practices in the medical field.
In a conversation with Nepal News Bank, Chairman of HAMS Hospital, R. S. Bhandari said that HAMS has been providing all the treatment services that can be provided in Nepal and the collaboration with Max Hospital will be useful only for some modern treatments that are not possible in Nepal. He said that the collaboration between HAMS and Max will facilitate financial, managerial and post-treatment services for patients who need to go abroad for treatment.
‘All services available at HAMS are available here. But if the patients need some super-speciality treatment that is not available in Nepal, they can easily get treatment through Max Hospital,” he said.
According to him, the patients visiting Max Hospital will get special concession in the treatment fee, necessary coordination for the treatment and regular follow-up service at HAMS after completing the treatment.
He said that this will remove the compulsion of the patients to visit India time and again.
Bhandari clarified that this collaboration was not an initiative of the Government of Nepal or the Government of India, but a commercial collaboration between two private health institutions.
According to him, the collaboration was made for limited services as it was not economically possible to operate some advanced technology in Nepal due to Nepal’s population and size of health care market.
He clarified that HAMS does not intend to send patients abroad and said that all possible treatment in Nepal will be done here and only those who need it will be provided treatment at Max Hospital in an easy and systematic manner.
“Our main objective is how we can provide treatment to patients at a lower cost, less hassle and safely,” he said.
Similarly, the Executive Director of HAMS Hospital, Dr. Dr. Jyotindra Sharma said that CME program is an important way to enhance the knowledge and skills of doctors. On the occasion, cardiologist and lung specialist at Max Hospital in India and senior cardiologist of Nepal, Dr. Dr. Bhagawan Koirala, lung and thoracic surgeon Dr. Ranjan and others presented scientific papers.
Dr. According to Sharma, the collaboration between HAMS and Max has been in operation for more than a year. The collaboration has been in the training of doctors and health workers, exchange of human resources, institutional referral of complicated patients, treatment management and exchange of experience on modern treatment technology.
He further said that although treatment of most of the diseases is possible in Nepal, advanced treatment services like heart transplant, long transplant, LVAD are not yet available.”We don’t want to send patients abroad,” he said.
We do it where treatment is possible in Nepal. However, this collaboration is aimed at providing patients with an easy, safe and cost-effective alternative to services that are not available here. According to him, the partnership with Indian hospitals will also increase opportunities for Nepali doctors to train and gain experience in cutting-edge technology, which will help improve the quality of health service in Nepal in the long run.
HAMS said in a statement, “The partnership with Max Hospital is expected to further strengthen the Nepal-India healthcare partnership by ensuring easy access, quality care and continuous follow-up for patients in Nepal needing critical care.”
