. KATHMANDU: Former Deputy Prime Minister and senior leader of the ruling Nepal Communist Party (NCP) Narayan Kaji Shrestha has said any attempt to hurt the spirit of the constitution and democratic system in the name of constitution amendment was not acceptable.
Speaking at a program organized to mark the 13th memorial day of Nara Bahadur Karmacharya, Shrestha said that the constitution amendment process should be carried out in a responsible way and protecting the spirit of the constitution. Stating that the basic spirit of the constitution and protection of democracy should be the first priority, he said that it could be amended only as per the need.
“We are ready to amend the constitution as per the need by making the protection of the constitution and democracy the main thing without allowing the main content of the constitution to be disrobed or hijacked.” But we will not allow the constitution and democracy to be killed in the name of constitution amendment. We have to stand up against it,” he said.
Shrestha also said that the issue of exempting academic and educational institutions from political interference and banning student unions should not be understood in the same way.
He also said that banning trade unions cannot be compared with the same.
“It is not the same thing to say that academic and educational institutions should be kept free from politics and to ban student unions,” he said.
