. BERLIN (AP) — At least one person was killed and 17 others injured when a vehicle plowed into a crowded crowd of people at the annual Christopher Street Day (CSD) Pride event in Berlin on Saturday night, police said. Some of the injured are said to be in critical condition.
The incident took place near the Tiergarten Park. The driver fled the scene after the accident while police launched a massive search operation to nab the driver after a damaged white vehicle was found at the scene.
Berlin police spokesman Florian Nath said preliminary information was received that a vehicle entered the Tiergarten park and hit several people.
However, police said they were investigating whether the incident was a planned attack.
A large number
of police and rescue teams were deployed after the incident. Police have intensified the manhunt for the suspect and are investigating the case from all angles.
Berlin police said some of the 17 injured were in life-threatening condition.
A separate information centre has also been set up for the relatives of the victims. Berlin Mayor Kai Wagner condemned the attack and called it an attack on Berlin’s free, open and tolerant society. He expressed his condolences to the victims and their families and expressed confidence that a thorough investigation would be carried out into the incident.
Hundreds of thousands of people attended a Pride event in Berlin on Saturday in support of tolerance and diversity.
The parade was called off at around 10:15 p. m. when a concert was underway near the Brandenburg Gate.
Police have urged the public to stay away from the Teargarten area and return home to assist in emergency rescue efforts.
The cause of the incident and the driver’s motive are under investigation. ANI
