Midnight clash in Sunsari: One killed in police firing, administration imposes curfew
Biratnagar. The District Administration Office (DAO) of Sunsari district has imposed an indefinite curfew order in five areas following a clash between two groups at Dewangunj rural municipality-3 in Sunsari district. In the incident, a youth was killed and 22 people including civilians and security personnel were injured.
According to the police, at around 10:15 pm on Sunday, the Hindu pilgrims were on their way to Kaptanganj Chowk with water from the Koshi Barrage to play DJ for the Bolbam Yatra.
During this time, a dispute started with some people from another community over the sound of the DJ and it turned into a clash.
After the situation went out of control, a joint team of Nepal Police and Armed Police Force was mobilized.
Police fired three rounds of warning shots in the air after the two sides started attacking each other with stones, sticks, bamboo and spears.
Om Prakash Mehta, 24, of Dewangunj Rural Municipality-3, Kaptangunj was seriously injured in the incident.
He was rushed to Biratnagar-based Neuro Hospital for treatment but doctors pronounced him dead last night, said Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Chandra Bahadur Khadka.
Nine civilians were also injured in the incident.
They are being treated at Neuro Hospital, Birat Nursing Home, Koshi Hospital and other health facilities.
Eight security personnel including Inspector Rakesh Rai and five security personnel of the Armed Police Force (APF) were injured in the clash.
Following the incident, an emergency meeting of the District Security Committee was held and curfew has been imposed in Ghuski, Bhutaha, Kaptanganj and Dewangunj bazaar areas of Harinagara Rural Municipality and Dewangunj bazaar area of Dewangunj Rural Municipality-3 until another notice. Movement, assembly, procession, demonstration and assembly are prohibited in these areas during the curfew period.
The administration has warned of action as per the Local Administration Act, 2028 if the order is violated.
