. KATHMANDU: Nepali Congress President Gagan Kumar Thapa has said that skills and knowledge required for disaster management were not enough.
Inaugurating the ‘preparedness and response training’ organized by the Nepali Congress Central Policy, Research and Training Academy on Saturday, Thapa said systematic training was necessary to work effectively during disaster. He further said that the NC had played an active role in preventing violence and provocation by immediately contacting the local people’s representatives and the party’s responsible people following the incident that took place in Dewangunj of Sunsari some days ago.
“The party is continuously trying to maintain social harmony,” he said.
Thapa said that disaster management is a separate science in itself and emotions alone are not enough.
He said, “Skills are also needed for disasters. If you do not know what to help, how to do it, sometimes it can be even more difficult to help. Therefore, not only emotions, but also skill and knowledge are necessary. “
The party has set a target to form a team in disaster management in all 753 local levels of the country,” he said.
He said that the cadres who received the training are expected to reach the country and train others and play an active role in disaster management. Stating that compassion is the most important quality for leadership, Thapa said good leadership would not be possible without sensitivity to feel the pain of the citizens.”Compassion is the most important thing for leadership in this time,” he said.
The need of the hour is a leadership that can feel the suffering of others and can support the suffering of the citizens. Stating that politics is not only for power and power but also means of human service and civil service, Thapa said the NC should work keeping the same values at the centre.
He also expressed the belief that the training programme conducted by the Academy would play an important role in making the party cadres capable and responsible in disaster management. Vice-President Bishwa Prakash Sharma said that one should work for the society rather than for the party and the country.
