Eight people die in road accidents every day across the country, traffic police target ‘zero accidents’
Kathmandu. Kathmandu–Federation of Nepalese National Transport Entrepreneurs (FNNTE) chair Punya Sitaula (Saroj) has stressed the need for all sides to be responsible to make public transport more passenger-friendly, entrepreneur-friendly and worker-friendly.
Speaking at the felicitation, posting and training program organized by the FNJ here today, President Sitaula said that it was not appropriate to blame only the public transport for road accidents.
Stating that two-wheelers and other private vehicles also cause many accidents, he said that all the vehicles should not be seen in the same way.
“A lot of accidents are caused by two-wheelers and other private vehicles. But putting everyone in the same pot is called a traffic accident. The exact cause of the accident needs to be ascertained,” he said.
He stressed on the need for entrepreneurs and driver-helpers to follow discipline to make the public transport sector more systematic.
According to him, most of the vehicles are now operating under lane discipline.
Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Suresh Prasad Kafle, chief of Kathmandu Valley Traffic Police Office, stressed on the need of collaboration between traffic police and transport entrepreneurs. He said that the main objective of the traffic police is to prevent untimely deaths of citizens from road accidents and to reduce the number of injuries.
“Our first objective is to ensure that no citizen is killed or injured on the road,” he said.
According to SSP Kafle, around 67 lakh vehicles have been registered across the country.
Of them, around 63 lakh vehicles are in operation, he said. According to him, more than 200,000 vehicles are plying daily in the Kathmandu Valley alone.

5 road accidents take place daily in the Kathmandu Valley and eight people lose their lives in road accidents every day. Of them, around five die in the Kathmandu Valley, he said. He also said that more than 5 people are affected by serious accidents every day.
