. KATHMANDU: The 24th National Council meeting of the Nepal National Teachers’ Organisation (NNTA) has concluded at Jawalakhel in Lalitpur on Monday.
The organization, which was established in 2036 BS at a difficult time of autocratic Panchayat system and entered its 47th year, has unanimously passed the 25-point historic ‘Lalitpur Declaration, 2083’ from this meeting.
Representatives and observers from all seven provinces enthusiastically participated in the meeting that ran from August 1 to 19.
On the first day of the Council, JTUCC President Binod Shrestha was the chief guest.
During the meeting, a seminar program on ‘Nepali Teachers’ Movement: Present Context and Way Forward’ was organized and discussed on various important issues. Similarly, the meeting also endorsed the organizational report presented by General Secretary Prakash Khanal, the financial report presented by Treasurer Naba Bahadur Rawal, the audit report and the report presented by Chief of Women Department Ambika Pokharel Chapagain. The 25-point declaration and decisions issued by the 25-point manifesto and decisions include professional security, educational reform and constitutional rights of teachers and employees.
Federal Education Act: A demand has been made to immediately issue a new ‘Federal Education Act’ in line with the constitution by ending the situation of running the education sector through the Panchayat Act of 2028.
Increase in education budget: Objecting to the reduction of at least 20 percent of the national budget or 5 percent of the gross domestic product to the education sector, it has been stressed to ensure an increase in the education budget.
The organization has objected to the restrictions or curtailments on the trade union rights of the professionals and threatened to file a constitutional writ petition at the Supreme Court, a complaint with the National Human Rights Commission and a nationwide peaceful protest if their legitimate demands were not addressed immediately.
