Kathmandu. KATHMANDU: The Department of Transport Management (DoTM) has increased the fares of inter-state public transport across the country. The department has decided to increase the fare of both passenger and cargo vehicles with effect from April 30, 2083.

According to the Department, the adjustment has been done according to the principle agreement of the Ministry of Physical Infrastructure and Transport and the scientific fare adjustment system of the Department. The main reason for the fare hike is the steep increase in the market price of diesel. According to the automated system of the department, there is a provision to adjust the fare if the price of fuel fluctuates by more than 5 percent.

According to the department, the average price of diesel has increased by 30.41 percent to Rs 235.83 per liter from Rs 180.83 per liter in the last time the fare was adjusted.

According to the new rates, the fare of passenger vehicles has been increased by 5.3 percent. Likewise, the fare for goods carriers has been increased by 7.7 percent and 9.1 percent in the Terai route. This increase will have a direct impact on the cost of long-distance travel and transportation.

The Department has made it clear that this decision will be applicable only on the national-level routes operated by two or more provinces. However, in the case of eco-friendly electric vehicles, the old fare will remain the same and there has been no increase in it. The department has also made public a detailed list of the new fare rates and informed all the stakeholders to implement it accordingly.
