Kathmandu. Two powerful earthquakes measuring 7.2 and 7.5 on the Richter scale struck the north-central region of Venezuela on Wednesday. The U. S. Geological Survey (USGS) said there was a possibility of “high human casualties” and widespread destruction.
According to sources, the first 7.2 quake was 39 seconds after another powerful earthquake of 7.5 magnitude. Both quakes were centered about 160 kilometers west of Caracas. The U. S. Geological Survey estimates that there is a 44 per cent chance of more than 10,000 people dying and a 30 per cent chance of more than 100,000 people dying. At the time of filing this report, the details of the damage have not been released.
The earthquake caused damage in the area and some structures have completely collapsed.
Search and rescue operations are underway in the damaged and affected areas, the sources said.
