Kathmandu. Finance Minister Dr Swarnim Wagle has said that the tax proposed in education and health sector will not affect poor and marginalized citizens. Responding to the queries raised by lawmakers in the meeting of the House of Representatives on Sunday, Finance Minister Wagle claimed that the tax has been brought under the policy of equality for strengthening public education.
“The notion that taxes on education and health will affect the poor and the poor are misleading,” he said. He said, “You raised the issue that taxes on education and health affect the poor and the poor. It has been a month since the budget was announced, we have discussed it adequately. Taxes do not touch the poor and the poor. ’
Around 75 to 80 per cent of Nepal’s children study in private schools, he said, adding that the tax will not affect them. According to him, the tax proposal was only targeted at the parents of students studying in private schools.
“Around 75 to 80 percent of Nepal’s children study in private schools. This tax is not proposed for non-private individuals,” he said.
According to Wagle, arrangements have been made for the families paying around Rs 10,000 monthly in some private schools to contribute around Rs 300 and the money collected from this will be spent for the education of children from marginalized, Dalit and impoverished families.
“In some private schools, families paying Rs 10,000 will contribute Rs 300. The money collected will be used to provide relief to marginalized, Dalit, landless people and poor families and to strengthen public education,” he said.
Finance Minister Wagle expressed surprise that there was opposition to the policy even when it was brought in an egalitarian policy. He said he was surprised to see that lawmakers, especially those involved in leftist politics, opposed such a policy instead of welcoming it.
“I am surprised to see that many lawmakers who have been involved in leftist politics in Nepal are protesting from the same angle even when they bring a policy that should be cheered,” he said.
Claiming that the government has proposed historic tax reform through the budget, he urged the government to see it in connection with long-term social justice and strengthening public services.
