Kathmandu. Nepal Transport Workers Union, affiliated to the trade union Congress, has expressed its concern over the government’s proposed traffic fine and the current state of road safety. The association has also conducted various campaigns.
The International Transport Works Federation (ITWF) has also organized a global campaign in Nepal following the guidelines of ILO for safe roads and decent work.
During the week-long campaign from July 29 to July 7, the union has put forth the demands of respecting and dignifying the transport workers, implementation of social security, registration of transport workers in the local government, scrapping of the proposed fine, safe roads, fair remuneration and guarantee of employment.
Likewise, the campaign has been launched in different places putting forth 13-point demands including holding a national transport policy conference involving all stakeholders, increasing tripartite dialogue, fixing the deadline for working and setting up of Transport Workers Welfare Fund by imposing one percent customs duty on imported vehicles.
Carrying banners and placards with a 13-point demand, the representatives of the association raised awareness at workplaces, bus parks, ticket counters and other places. On the occasion, corner meetings, dustbin distribution, blood donation and cleaning activities were carried out.
During the week-long campaign, the NRNA led by its national president Dharma Raj Bhandari met with Ashish Gajurel, chairman of the Infrastructure Development Committee of the parliament and submitted a 13-point memorandum on behalf of the association.
During the campaign, discussions were held on reducing road accidents, social security, registration at local level, scrapping proposed fines and safe roads. Receiving the memorandum, President Gajurel said that the party is serious about the related issues.
During the campaign, corner meetings, blood donation, eye health check-up and dustbins were distributed to public vehicles. Since 2023, various activities have been carried out by the unions affiliated to the Campaign Federation, which has been continuously raising various issues of transport workers.
