KATHMANDU: Nepal Trade Union Congress (NTUC) has drawn the attention of the government towards the agitation of temporary employees, the demand for justice for the victims of meter interest, the problem of landless squatters and the ratification and implementation of the International Labour Organisation (ILO) Conventions.
Issuing a press release on Thursday, the Federation said the demands raised by the agitating contractual, wage and temporary employees in Singha Durbar are directly related to the dignity of workers and social justice.
The federation has demanded the government to adopt a clear, transparent and just policy to secure the future of the employees who have been serving in the government bodies for a long time and to renew the contract period without removing the contractual employees. Stating that the problem of meter interest victims is related to human rights and social justice, the federation has urged the government to provide speedy justice to the victims, bring the culprits to book and make effective legal arrangements to prevent such incidents from happening in the future. Similarly, the federation has expressed serious dissatisfaction over the removal of squatters’ settlements in various places without adequate preparations and alternative arrangements.
Such measures have directly affected daily wage earners and informal sector workers, women, children, senior citizens and other vulnerable groups.
The Federation has concluded that forcibly removing the settlements without identifying, collecting data, legal verification and providing proper rehabilitation or alternative housing of the genuine landless squatters and unsystematic settlers would not be appropriate from the point of view of human sensitivity and social justice.
It has also demanded the government to provide a long-term, scientific and just solution to this problem.
Meanwhile, the FNCCI has thanked the Government of Nepal and the Federal Parliament for the ratification of the ILO Convention No. 29 (Protocol of 2014) by the House of Representatives on July 14, 2003.
It has also urged the government to formulate the necessary laws for the implementation of the protocol.
The Federation has requested the Government of Nepal to ratify the Convention on Labour Inspection No. 81 (1947) at the earliest and to expedite the ratification of the Convention No. 87 of the Convention on Freedom of Association and the Right to Organize, as well as the Convention No. 190, 193, 189, 177, 102, 155 and 187. In a press release, General Secretary Ajay Kumar Rai stressed that the government should be serious towards labour rights, social justice and implementation of international labour standards.
