. Mandala Theatre-Nepal has successfully organized a reception for the students of the third batch (2026-2027) of Mandala Drama School (MDS) on Friday at Mandala Theatre, Kathmandu.
With the welcome program, the 18-month residential theater training program under the RANGA (Reclaiming Advocacy through Narratives, Debates, Grassroots Theatre and Arts) project funded by the European Union has been formally launched. Mandla
Drama School is one of Mandala Theatre-Nepal’s flagship programmes that aims to produce socially conscious theatre creators, theatre artists, trainers, writers, directors and cultural leaders from across Nepal. A total of 15 participants were selected through a competitive selection process among the youths who had applied for the third batch from across the country.
The reception was chaired by Mr. Budhiram Tamang, Chairman of Mandala Theatre-Nepal and Mr. Veronique Lorenzo, Ambassador of the European Union to Nepal was the Chief Guest.
The event was attended by representatives of various government agencies, universities, development partners and the Nepali theatre sector.
In the program, Mandala Theatre-Nepal was informed about the purpose and journey of the RANGA project and Mandala Drama School. Also, all the students of the third batch were formally introduced and presented with a welcome gift.
Mandala Drama School’s new curriculum is practice-based and connected to the community. The three semesters include acting, physical and artistic training, participatory and community theatre, creative writing, technical theatre, interdisciplinary art practice and independent playmaking.
The 18-month residential program aims to develop students into independent, socially conscious, and community-based theater artists. At the event, GIZ representatives shared their experience with the previous two batches of Mandala Drama School and highlighted the role that long-term drama education has played in developing the skills of young theatre artists.
He highlighted the contributions of the alumni in different parts of the country and expressed confidence that such efforts would continue in the days to come. Similarly, the Ambassador of the European Union, H. E. Véronique Lorenzo, in his special address, described theatre as an effective means of dialogue, cultural preservation and social transformation.
Appreciating Mandala Theatre-Nepal’s efforts to provide opportunities to young artists from different communities of Nepal, he encouraged the students to be curious, courageous and socially responsible artists.
He called for using art and creativity as a means to build an inclusive, just and tolerant society.
At the event, Mandala Alumni Circle also presented a special theatrical performance to welcome the new students, which showcased the spirit of creativity, collaboration and theatrical journey of Mandala Drama School.
After the reception, students will formally begin their 18 months residential studies at Mandala Drama School. During this period, they will develop themselves as independent and socially responsible theatre artists through practice, research, drama production and collaboration with the community.
At the end of the program, Mr. Buddhiram Tamang, President of Mandala Theatre-Nepal, thanked the European Union, the project partner organization Debate Network Nepal (DNN), Campaign for Change (CFC), all the guests, partners and supporters for making this event possible
