Radhe Radhe’s Forgotten Palace: Hidden in mystery for two decades
Ruins of Radhe Radhe 17-storey palace: Known as ‘Govinda’s Bhavan’ but the reality remains a mystery

Bhaktapur. Busy time in the morning. There is a long queue of vehicles at Radhe Radhe Chowk. Some are rushing towards Bhaktapur while some are returning to Kathmandu. The roadside tea shops have opened. Passengers are waiting for the bus. The hustle and bustle of the surroundings is making the square lively.
But in the midst of this noise and concrete, one structure has stood silent for years. The 17-storey building, which was stalled during the construction, is becoming a ruin day by day. The reality of the building, which has been halted for decades, remains a mystery.
The construction of the building was started in 2067 BS and is spread over an area of 6 ropanis and 3 anna at Radhe Radhe Chowk.
Locals, who had anticipated the construction of a big commercial building and increased economic activity, were surprised by the prolonged halt in construction.
Anyone entering Bhaktapur from Kathmandu can see this building. The tall structure, the incomplete windows, the open concrete, the weeds growing upwards and the ugly scene of the drying up of the grass are attracting the attention of many.
The
building stood as a witness to the once ambitious plan. However, the answer to the question of whether the construction has not been completed even after two decades of the start of the construction is still not clear.
This building is not a new sight for the locals of Radheradhe. Instead, it has become an integral part of their daily lives. If you want to show someone a location or a route, the easiest way to say ‘near that big building’ is the easiest identification. Whether it’s calling an ambulance or giving an address, this building has become the first thing to remember.
The question of why this building, which has become the identity of Radhe Radhe, remains incomplete, has not been erased yet. Passengers and locals are searching for the reason behind the halt in the construction of the building. But the clear answer has not been found yet.
In order to find an answer to this question, a team of Nepal News Bank reached Radhe Radhe for field reporting. We tried to find out why this building had been in limbo for years through conversations with the locals, direct observation of the building and the opinion of the concerned authorities.
In a conversation with us, a 62-year-old local man recalls, “This building started when my children were young.
Now they have become parents themselves. But the building is still there. We don’t know the reality yet,” he said.
When the construction of the building began, there was great enthusiasm among the locals. It was expected that a five-star hotel would be operated here, a business hub would be established, hundreds of youths would get employment and the economic activities of Radhe Radhe would reach a new height.
The value of the surrounding land was also rising. Local businessmen had begun to make plans to expand their business. However, the construction work was halted after the main structure collapsed, and the project could not move forward again.
Most of the windows in the building are currently empty. Somewhere, the iron rods have come out. Years of sunshine have turned the color of the concrete pale. Weeds can be seen growing on the upper floors. Although it is a huge building, only a part of its first floor is occupied by a family who lives for care. All the other floors are deserted.
“In the past, everyone used to say that work would resume in a few months,” says a local businessman.
Now, no one even talks about it. The hope that the construction of the building will be completed has died. Another local woman expressed her frustration over the years, saying, “I have been looking like this for 20 years. Why are they in limbo? We have heard that the municipality has stopped it without meeting the criteria. It’s just that something is being done now. Another rumor related to this building of Radhe Radhe is the name of Indian actor Govinda. Many people refer to it as ‘Govinda’s Building’.
However, according to experts, Govinda’s visit to the construction site once has spread such a rumour.
In reality, the project is said to be associated with Nepali business house Jagadamba Group and other investors.
Construction is believed to have stopped completely around 2017. The process related to foreign investment, disputes among investors, financial management challenges and legal complexities have been discussed as the main reasons behind the stalling of the project. However, no detailed public information has been received from the concerned parties yet.
Inside the building: Mystery and silence
We reached the building in the course of on-the-ground reporting. In the field reporting, we also saw a small shop near the main gate of the building. You have to enter the shop through it. But it wasn’t easy for us to get in.
From the outside, the building looked ordinary, but due to the many discussions and curiosities about it, the atmosphere there felt a bit mysterious.
When we asked about the way inside, a woman in the shop looked uncomfortable and angry. When we told her that she was a journalist and had come only to get information about the building, she did not want to say anything more.
Instead, she reiterated her stance that she would not be allowed inside.
“No one can get in here,” she said in a loud voice.

We only got a chance to go inside after we got to know the condition of the building and talk to the people who were there and then tell us to come back.
When I entered, a man was cleaning the building on the first floor. As soon as we arrived, he warned us that no one could come here.
During the conversation with him, we asked, ‘Do you live here?’
He replied briefly, “Yes, I am sitting to take care of this building.” But we can’t say anything. “
Then we asked another question, “It sounds like this is a foreigner’s building, whose is it really?”
He clarified, “No, not a foreigner. It belongs to Jagadamba. They are the ones who have taken care of us. Ask them about other things. However, officials of the Jagdamba Group did not want to be contacted.
Then he went back to his work without saying anything more. There was silence inside the building. The unfinished rooms, open pillars, dust and humidity made it clear how neglected a project was once a big investment. Although it was a huge structure, there was no sign of life in it. Instead, it was a frightening feeling to enter a building that had been in disuse for a long time.
Why is
banned from journalists?
More than the state of the building, another question caught my attention: Why are journalists not allowed to enter the building?
When going to get general information, they are not allowed to take photos or videos, they do not want to answer questions, and the person concerned does not say anything in public, which creates more curiosity about this project. There are a lot of questions about the project that are mysterious and suspicious.
If the project is in the legal process, why is the concerned party not ready to make clear information about it? And if there is a plan for the future of the building, why hasn’t the local community been informed about it? These questions remain unanswered.
Municipality’s response to
Municipality’s response is also unclear
Attempts to understand the municipality’s opinion on this issue could not be found.
Spokesperson of the municipality Krishna Hari Acharya said, “We are not saying anything about this right now.
The study is being conducted in collaboration with the engineering college. We will talk about it when the report comes. “
This response indicates that the condition of the building is in the study phase, but it is not yet clear when construction will begin, whether the structure is safe or what its future holds.
Unfulfilled dream, unfulfilled question
Thousands of people pass by looking at this building every day. For some, it’s just an unfinished building. For some, it’s a familiar face. But for the locals, it is also an unfulfilled dream of development. The cost of the building and the partners are yet to be ascertained.
The project, which began two decades ago with great hope, today stands like a silent monument. New houses were built around, businesses expanded, and traffic on the roads increased. Radhe Radhe changed a lot. But this 17-storey building, standing in the middle of the courtyard, could not change with time.
Even today, thousands of travelers take a look at this building every day.
And the same question arises in their minds, why is such a big project incomplete? What is its future? And when will the deserted ruined palace of Radhe Radhe get the answer?
