Floods and landslides wreak havoc in Bajura due to heavy rains, 16 households affected, Sanphe-Martadi highway obstructed
Bajura.Floods and landslides triggered by incessant rainfall since last night have caused huge damages in different places of Bajura. Settlements, roads and agriculture sectors have been affected as the water level in the small and big rivers of nine local levels of the district has increased due to incessant rain.
Many families have been displaced due to floods and landslides in different places including Selaghat near the district headquarters Martadi.
A police team led by Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Shaileshwori Bohara, chief of the District Police Office, Bajura, reached the incident site last night and launched rescue operation. Police said they have rescued vulnerable people and shifted the belongings of the affected families to safer places.
The Sanphe-Martadi highway has also been obstructed due to heavy rains.
All types of long and short route vehicles have come to a grinding halt due to the obstruction.

16 households have been affected when a landslide occurred at Selagad area of Badimalika municipality-9. Of them, three households are at high risk of disaster while 13 households are at high risk, the District Police Office, Bajura said. The houses of three high-risk households have become uninhabitable. There are 22 members in the three households and 83 in the other 13 households.
Similarly, 230 meters of plastic pipe and 25 meters of concrete canal of 200 mm capacity have been washed away by the landslide in the Totke Irrigation Canal at Rapka area.
According to the local administration, floods and landslides have turned many fertile land into barren lands.
The administration has urged the people living on the banks of the river and those at risk of landslides to adopt high alertness as rainfall continues in the district. According to the ‘Disaster Preparedness and Response Plan-2083’ made public by the District Disaster Management Committee, around 150 settlements at nine local levels of Bajura are at high risk of flood and landslide.
Most of the settlements at Budhiganga, Khaptad Chhededaha, Triveni, Gaumul, Badimalika, Budhinanda, Swamikartik, Jagannath and Himali rural municipalities are at risk of disaster.
More than
135 villages in the district are reeling under the risk of floods and landslides every year. The locals are compelled to stay awake the whole night during the rainy season.
Although the need to relocate high-risk settlements has been pointed out for the past few years, it has not been effectively implemented so far. Last year, around Rs 60 million was sent to the accounts of the local governments to build temporary shelters for the families affected by the floods and landslides.
Most of the geography of Bajura is prone to slopes and landslides, which makes it prone to natural disasters every year.
The stakeholders said that the risk has increased due to the lack of effective progress in the development of integrated settlement and relocation of settlements to safer places.
Chief District Officer (CDO) Dorendra Niraula said the disaster risk could be minimized through early warning, public awareness, preparedness and systematic response plan.
He said although it was not easy to immediately relocate all the vulnerable settlements, adopting precautionary measures during monsoon, receiving information through official media and adopting precaution were the main measures to minimize the loss of life and property. He did.
