. A procession of Dipankar Tathagata Buddha and Panchdan program is to be organized in Kathmandu on July 29 with the objective of reminding them of the Samyak Mahadan, which should be organized every 12 years but has not been done for the last 24 years.
The event will be held on the premises of Maha Buddha Mahavihara at Kathmandu Metropolitan City-27 on the occasion of Guru Purnima, according to the organizers.
Acting Mayor of Kathmandu Metropolitan City Sunita Dangol and Ward No. Yogesh Kumar Khadgi, president of Province 27, was also present on the occasion. They have pledged to provide necessary support from the metropolis for the successful management of the program.
According to Mahasthavira Sangharatna Shakya, 85 Shakyas, Sthabira, Thaipa, Dipankara, Tathagata Buddha and living deities Shree Ganesh and Shree Bhairav from various Mahaviharas, Baha and Bahi of Kathmandu will be seated and offered five danas. Under the program, the seat of Dipankar Buddha will be taken from 7 am and the Panchadaan program will be held from 9 am to 11 am.
The procession will start from Mahabouddha at 12.30 pm and will pass through Asan, Tyod, Inbahal, Kamalakshi, Bhotahiti and reach Asan Dabali. After that, the special puja will start and will continue till 7 pm, according to the organizers.
The Shakya community has Shantighat Chaitya Bajradhatu Mahavihara (Thahiti), Ratnamandal Mahavihara (Nagha-Baha), Ashoka Chaitya Mahavihara (Asambaha), Mahabuddha Mahavihara (Mahabouddha), Dharma Chakra Mahavihara (Chadhabaha), Ratnakara Mahavihara (Koshavaha), Kirtipunya Mahavihara (Kohiti Bahaka), Dharmakara Mahavihara (Tonwaha, Yangal), Vikramsheel Mahavihara (Om Bahal) and Kirtipunya Bhuvanasundar Mahavihara (Lagantole). Similarly, the joint Mahavihara of Shakya and Bajracharya community includes Keshchandra Paravart Mahavihara of Itumbahal, Kanakachaitya Mahavihara of Janabahal, Shrikhandtarmul Mahavihara of Basantapur, Makhan Bahal, Kirtipunya Mahavihara of Lagvaha and Brahmachakra Mahavihara of Om Bahal.
There are 16 Bahi in the metropolis including Cha Wahi, Kotu Cha Wahi, Atulkhu Wahi, Mahankal Wahi, Bijyas Wahi, Khushi Wahi, Maru Wahi, Makham Wahi, Gana Wahi, Twahka Wahi, Nhyakam Wahi, Sengu Wahi, Kotu Wahi, Dung Wahi and Na Wahi.
Samyak Mahadan is a traditional Buddhist religious festival held in the Swayambhu area. Its last project was completed in 2060 BS. According to the organizers, this year’s procession of Dipankar Buddha and Panchdaan program is being organized with the objective of reminding them of this tradition which should be organized every 12 years as the Mahadan has not taken place since then.
